Better: Part Eight
Pastor Paul Stieb
Day 1: Spirit Over Emotions
Devotional
Have you ever felt like your emotions were driving while your faith sat helplessly in the passenger seat? Many of us live at the mercy of our feelings. We allow them to dictate our decisions and determine our spiritual temperature. God has a different plan for our emotional life. When we are spiritually minded, we are not controlled by the ups and downs of circumstances. Instead, our thoughts become anchored in God's truth and governed by His Spirit. This doesn't mean we won't feel emotions. It means our emotions won't be in the driver's seat. Being spiritually minded means choosing to focus on God's goodness, even when life feels overwhelming. It's remembering that the same God who parted the Red Sea is fighting our battles today.
When you align your mind with the Spirit, you begin to see your circumstances through Heaven's perspective rather than earth's limitations. Your emotions are designed to follow your spiritual focus, not lead it. When you set your mind on things above, your heart naturally follows. This is the pathway to emotional freedom—not through managing feelings, but through managing your spiritual focus.
Bible Verse
“Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God's law, nor can it do so. Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God.”
–Romans 8:5-8
Reflection Question
Are you allowing your emotions to lead your decisions, or are you setting your mind on what the Spirit desires?
Quote
“Your emotions will not lead you to where only the Spirit can.”
Prayer
Lord, help me be spiritually minded rather than emotionally driven. Teach me to set my thoughts on You and Your truth, trusting that my emotions will follow where my spirit leads. In Jesus’s name, amen.
Day 2: Guarding Your Heart's Gateway
Devotional
Your heart is like a fortress, and your thoughts are the gateway. Everything entering your emotional world first passes through the doorway of your mind. This is why Scripture places such emphasis on guarding your thoughts. Thoughts are the control center of your emotional experience. When you allow negative, fearful, or discouraging thoughts to freely enter your mind, you are opening the floodgates to emotional chaos. When you become intentional about what thoughts you entertain, you experience the peace and stability that God intended for you.
Guarding your heart means being selective about what you allow to occupy your mental space. It means choosing to meditate on God's promises rather than your problems. It means focusing on His faithfulness rather than your fears. This isn't denying reality; it's choosing what gets the most attention in your thought life. Every thought you entertain is a seed planted in the soil of your mind. Over time, these seeds grow into the harvest of your emotional life. If you don't like the emotional fruit you're experiencing, it's time to examine the seeds you've been planting.
Bible Verse
“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”
–Proverbs 4:23
Reflection Question
What thoughts have you been allowing to freely enter your mind? How are they affecting your emotional well-being?
Quote
“Be careful what you think, because your thoughts control your life.”
Prayer
Father, help me be a faithful guardian of my heart and mind. Give me wisdom to recognize and reject thoughts that don't align with Your truth. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
Day 3: Taking Every Thought Captive
Devotional
Imagine every negative, fearful, or discouraging thought having to pass through a security checkpoint before entering your mind. What if you had the authority to arrest thoughts that were working against your well-being? The amazing truth is that you do have that authority! Spiritual warfare isn't only fighting external battles. It is a daily fight for control of your thoughts. Every day, thoughts that oppose God's truth about you try to establish strongholds in your mind. They may be thoughts of inadequacy, fear, hopelessness, or defeat. You don't have to let them set up camp. Taking thoughts captive means actively engaging with what's happening in your mind, rather than passively accepting every thought that comes your way. It means comparing every thought to God's Word and rejecting anything that doesn't align with His truth. This is where transformation begins—not in trying to change your emotions directly, but in changing the thoughts that produce those emotions. When you consistently capture and replace negative thoughts with Biblical truth, you begin to experience the emotional freedom that Christ died to give you.
Bible Verse
“For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”
–2 Corinthians 10:3-5
Reflection Question
What specific thoughts do you need to take captive and replace with God's truth today?
Quote
“You must defend your thought life if you want a better emotional life.”
Prayer
Lord, give me strength and wisdom to take every thought captive. Help me demolish strongholds of negativity and replace them with Your truth. In Jesus’s name, amen.
Day 4: Sowing Seeds of Truth
Devotional
Every farmer knows a fundamental principle: you reap what you sow. If you plant corn, you harvest corn. If you plant weeds, you harvest weeds. This same principle governs your emotional life. The thoughts you consistently plant in your mind will eventually become the emotional harvest you experience. If you've been sowing seeds of worry, fear, negativity, or discouragement, don't be surprised when your emotional life reflects those qualities. Here's the encouraging news: you can change your harvest by changing what you sow.
When you begin planting thoughts of God's faithfulness, love, provision, and promises, your emotional landscape transforms. This transformation doesn't happen overnight. You must first sow, then await the growing season. As you consistently sow Biblical truth into your mind, you'll begin to see peace, joy, and hope break through the soil. The question isn't whether this principle works; it's whether you'll be intentional about what you plant. Every day you're sowing something in the garden of your mind. Make sure you're planting seeds that will produce the emotional harvest you want to experience.
Bible Verse
“Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.”
–Galatians 6:7-8
Reflection Question
What kind of emotional harvest do you want to experience? What thoughts do you need to start sowing today to produce that harvest?
Quote
“If you don't like your emotional harvest, change your thoughts. Change the seeds being planted in your mind.”
Prayer
God, help me be intentional about the thoughts I sow in my mind. Give me patience as I wait for the harvest of peace and joy that comes from planting Your truth. In Jesus’s name, amen.
Day 5: Remembering Who You Are Devotional In the midst of life's challenges, it's easy to forget the most important truth about your identity: you belong to Jesus. When circumstances feel overwhelming and emotions threaten to pull you under, you need to remember that you're not just surviving, but that you're thriving because Christ lives in you. Too often we walk around carrying the weight of the world on our shoulders. We forget that we serve a God who has already overcome the world. We allow temporary circumstances to define our permanent identity. The truth is no matter what you're facing, you have Jesus, and Jesus is life itself. When you remember who you are in Christ, everything changes. You're not a victim of your circumstances, but a victor through Christ. You're not defined by your struggles, but by your Savior. You're not limited by your resources; you're empowered by His unlimited supply. This remembrance isn't just a mental exercise. It's a spiritual discipline that transforms your emotional reality. When you consistently remind yourself of your identity in Christ, your emotions align with His truth. You walk with the confidence of someone who knows they're loved, chosen, and empowered by the Creator of the universe. Bible Verse “For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until He comes.” –1 Corinthians 11:26 Reflection Question How would your emotional life change if you truly lived from the reality of who you are in Christ, rather than from your current circumstances? Quote “We have life in Jesus. We have Jesus, and Jesus is life.” Prayer Jesus, help me remember that I belong to You. Let this truth transform how I see myself, and how I respond to life's challenges. In Jesus’s name, amen.
